Suggestions on email program and anti-virus app combo.......?

I currently use Microsoft Outlook Web Access for my email (I have a personal account setup by a friend) along with Avast v4.7 Home version

I'm getting enough spam that I'm considering trying out Thunderbird. The Outlook Web Access doesn't do a good job of that. I'm also thinking about switching to AntiVir since I hear it has a higher detection rate than Avast.

Thunderbird is a local program like Outlook as opposed to a web access one like Yahoo Mail. AntiVir on the otherhand, does NOT scan email from programs like Outlook, and what I can also assume Thunderbird neither.

It seems like I can choose to switch one or the other but not both. I'm not completely had it with the spam. I don't get that many. Around 20 to 30 hits a day which I've kinda gotten used to deleting. On the otherhand, Avast's 80% to 90% or so detection rate doesn't seem too bad, but I hear AntiVir has a detection rate of around 90% to 95%. Which wouild u say is the best choice?

I strongly recommend Thunderbird over Outlook.

According to http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Avast! scored Advance for both On-Demand and Retrospective tests while AntiVir scored Advance+ (not Avance) on the On-Demand, and Standard on the Restrospective tests (Standard because it detected too many false positives, if it wasn't for that, it would have gotten higher).

It's true AntiVir has a higher detection rate, but it does detect a higher level of false positives than avast! so I recommend AntiVir for advance users (if you're an advance user and want to replace avast! with AntiVir, then by all means go for it).

Even though AntiVir doesn't have a mail scanner, it does have the main resident protection which will still detect any virus or other malware when you open up those emails.
Reply:Dunno, but Yahoo mail has SpamGuard Plus, and it scans emails.
Reply:Antivir is better. But does not scan e-mail. I like Trendmicro Antispam pilot for spam. It is very accurate but hard to find as they don't like giving it away anymore.
