I've used outlook express and Windows live mail and am disappointed in both... any others out there?

Depends on what kind of email you are using... If it's just web-mail (Hotmail, gmail, Yahoo) then I would just use their interface.
If it is a POP (Post Office Protocol) account from your ISP (service provider) than I would highly recommend "Mozilla Thunderbird" email client. It's made by the same people as Firefox and it is GREAT !!!
