Is there a way to tell before you open your email if it contains a virus? I do have a Norton antivirus program

In General, a virus would come in an attachment for you to OPEN if you chose to- and would be an exe. file of some sort. If you are using Norton AV , and it is up to date, you need to ensure it is set up to actively check your emails prior to your reading them, and it should then find any virus or trojan known to be so. Most anti virus programs have the same capablity, and some email programs have it built in, such as yahoo, scans the attachment prior to your opening it.

Never open an attachment from someone you Don't know, is a good idea in any case.

Scan it.
Reply:Normal flat HTML codes cannot carry viruses...if you are talking about downloading a file...U can set u'r virus scanner to scan U'r emails and downloads! But make sure you have the latest updated files for your virus scanner!
Reply:it should have been scan though you internet service provider

if it bypass the virus scan it says mail bypassed virus scan
Reply:Norton should block it or its attachments if there is a virus immediately!
Reply:Do not trust Norton, I got a virus on my computer this week while running up to date software and they wanted $60.00 to help me get rid of it. *****
Reply:Yahoo usually filters it out, or when you open it and the virus is in there Norton usually has a popup box come up and tells you its been deleted and is off your computer.
